It did not turn out to be good news for Miss Eagle.

‘Dislocated, and broken in two places,’ said Mr Miller. ‘Needed an operation. Two pins to hold it all together. She’ll be in plaster for weeks. Off school for months.’ He looked almost perky about it – or at least a lot less sleepy than usual.

‘Yeah, but how is she, sir?’ asked Big Mohammad.

‘When will she be back?’ asked Nishat.

‘Does it still hurt?’ asked Efe in a tiny voice.

Mr Miller leaned back in his chair. ‘Oh, she’s doing all right – lots of painkillers. I was the first member of staff to visit, you know,’ he said, puffing out his chest. ‘Mrs Cooper hasn’t been in. Sent a card, apparently. I took flowers. And grapes. And a ball of wool. Eleanor loves knitting …’

‘Do you fancy her, sir?’ said Madison.

‘Are you her boyfriend, sir?’ called Lianne.

I expected Mr Miller to tell them to shush – but instead he got a very smirky look on his face and stroked his cardigan buttons.

‘Ew,’ said Sam, wrinkling up her nose.

I hated asking questions in class, but I put my hand up anyway. I needed to know. ‘Did she have the post box with her, sir? The green ball with all the secrets in it?’

I could feel the nervous hope in the room.

But Mr Miller shook his head. ‘Eh? Nope. Didn’t see anything like that.’ He sighed. ‘I expect she’ll need a lift home from the hospital. You can guarantee no one else’ll offer … She’ll see who her real friends are, just you wait …’

Then he got Billie to take the register while he twirled round and round on his desk chair, humming.

‘Poor Miss Eagle,’ said Billie at lunch time.

‘Yeah,’ said Sam, sighing at the empty space in her lunch box where her apple used to be. ‘Imagine having to go out with Mr Miller. Urgh.’

‘Never mind about him,’ said Billie crossly. ‘What about the play? Who’s going to do Shakespeare with us if Miss Eagle’s off for months?’

For our English lesson that morning we’d had a very boring supply teacher, who made us all sit in silence and read copies of Treasure Island, one between two.

‘Well,’ I said quietly. ‘Actually I had an idea about that.’

‘Did you?’ said Jem.

I felt my face hot up because I don’t usually have ideas by myself. But Jem had been grumpy ever since Bridget drove us home two hours early on Sunday. I knew why: there must be a date happening with the invisible secret man-friend. I’d already offered to help out with wiping all the eyeliner off the pillows when whoever-he-was stopped being nice and sexy-faced, but that didn’t cheer her up at all; she’d spent all afternoon brewing something secret in the kitchen, which smelled of raw onions and was allegedly ‘Man-friend Repellent’. (‘Reckon it’s everything repellent, love,’ said Joel that evening, when no one would sit in there for dinner.)

‘Yes,’ I said. ‘Or – it was your mum’s idea, kind of. You’d already fallen asleep when she thought of it.
